This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are as diverse as a box of crayons. They're full of color. They're bright. They sparkle & glitter. They're sharp & never dull. They add life & color to a blank page or an empty classroom. They're creative. They're unique just like the names of the different colors...Tropical Rain Forest, Macaroni & Cheese, Tickle Me Pink. Some of them are broken, but you can still bring out the best from them. Some are tough to peel...did you ever try to unwrap a crayon wrapper & struggle? They're a little challenging. Some will wander from the box...roll across the desk & onto the floor...trying to get lost. They'll melt your heart & fill your day with joy. My students are like Harold and the Purple Crayon...they sometimes color outside of the lines. When my students come together in my classroom like the crayons in a Crayola Box, they create a masterpiece & I am proud to call them my 2nd graders. I want them to know that like Edward Binney, "The Crayon Man," I'm always listening & they should always be creating!
My students are like average children who'll wear down 720 crayons by their 10th birthdays!
My Project
At the beginning of every school year, my students are given a blank canvas to design so we can decorate our 2nd Grade hallway. Like the blank canvas, my students are blank canvases to the 2nd Grade team of teachers and we would like to get to know about them in a non-threatening way. We want our students to feel comfortable expressing themselves...we want them to take risks, have dreams, look at things from different perspectives, but most of all to find beauty in everything. We want our students to realize that "Creative people are curious, flexible, persistent, and independent with a tremendous spirit of adventure and a love of play." (Henri Matisse). By the end of 2nd Grade, we hope that we can "see their true colors shining through...so don't be afraid to your true colors!" (Cyndi Lauper)
"Sometimes, you have to see people as a crayon...they may not be your favorite color, but you need them to complete the picture." (Unknown).
