Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
While working in the Bronx as a new teacher, it has become painfully obvious why students are not achieving the heights that are expected of them. Often in my classes (two ninety minute classes each with 25 students, focusing on low level readers, including special education) there are not enough books to go around during our "independent reading" time. Independent reading is essential within my ninety minute class because it gives students the choice to pick a book that interests them and they own this book for the duration of their read. I fondly remember the first time I ever "owned" a book. My plea is that someone help me with the cost of purchasing books that the students will want to read. DeWitt-Clinton High School is an amazing school, but without books, the students do not receive the care they deserve. I love teaching English, and I want my students to love books and reading, because it is my passion. Thank you for reading this and taking the time to do something good for children.
Hopefully my students will be helped and you will have the satisfaction (that I get everyday) knowing that the students are reading quality material.
