Help me give my students the ability to accurately measure the mass of a variety of materials and substances. These triple beam balances will "balance out" our study of matter.
Each year I teach science to 65-80 diverse learners from a variety of backgrounds. Our school is in a rural area but we have many transplants from urban settings. Some students have grown up working on their family's farm while others have never before seen a "real" cow or horse. My classes consist of regular education and special education students with a variety of needs. The one thing they all seem to have in common is a sense of wonder about nature.
Fifth graders are inquisitive and love to explore the world around them.
They have just the right mix of wonder and excitement, and they love to work together to accomplish a goal. As their science teacher, I try to bring authentic learning experiences into the classroom that impact students' lives in a meaningful way, and then help them make connections with the larger world. I strive to provide many opportunities for them to explore and encourage their love of science and nature.
My Project
These triple beam balances will enhance the laboratory experience for my fifth-graders. I strive to provide my students with an environment that provides rich science experiences with real life applications. In recent years I have added digital thermometers, a digital microscope, engineering design challenges, and citizen science projects to improve the quality of students' overall science experience. Scientists don't use flimsy pan balances that need constant adjustment!
Triple beam balances will assist my young scientists in our study of matter and mass.
Fifth-graders are introduced to the Law of Conservation of Matter through the NextGen Science Learning Standards. It is difficult to explore this concept using our old and ineffective balances.
By donating to our project you will be supporting the science explorations of fifth-grade students, helping them become "balanced" young scientists!
