Our students attend a regular public school and are part of a Regional Program. They are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and most of them use American Sign Language to communicate. They come from places all around Oregon to attend our program so they can receive services that meet their specific and individualized needs.
Our students are bright, capable children who struggle with communication due to their hearing loss.
Some of students use speech only, a combination of speech and sign and some use ASL only. Many of them come from homes that are are bilingual and they are exposed to three ore more languages. This delays their language acquisition further and makes communication more of a barrier between them and their families. For many of our students school is more than just an education, it is their family. School is where they have access to communication and can express themselves with adults who understand them. For our students school It is a safe place where the student can develop themselves, learn about about their world, develop meaningful connections and grow to be the best they can be.
My Project
Our students will have the chance to actually travel to the depths of the ocean. For some of them this will be the first experience ever. When we arrive we will go straight to the Museum where we will see the different exhibits and learn about the underwater world. Students will partner up to do a scavenger hunt and discover all the creatures that you find in the ocean. Some items we will visit include sharks, sea otters, octopi, and strange ocean creatures.
After our museum experience we will board the bus to catch the tide pools on the actual beach where kids will get a real sense on where these creatures live.
For the first time students will touch the sand and see the grand ocean.
