Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our community is a seaside town that is located adjacent to a major Marine Corps base. We serve a diverse population, including military families and students with many different cultural backgrounds. The majority of our students are Latinos, African-Americans, Filipinos, or Pacific Islanders. 74% of our students are socioeconomically disadvantaged and 28% are English learners.
Our Kindergarteners are eager to come to school every day to learn with each other.
Kindergarten is the foundational year. Students learn to respect each other’s differences and show compassion through acts of kindness at school and in the community. Our students learn teamwork and collaboration through partnerships modeled by staff and parents. We pride ourselves on our spirit of optimism, enthusiasm, and determination.
My Project
Kindergartners lining up to take a spin on the playground tricycle track is an iconic image of childhood. Our students love to race tricycles during recess, but our current fleet is showing its age. Many of our students live in apartments and lack space to roam and "just be kids". The playground is a safe and welcoming space where they can play outside. Tricycles give our kindergartners an opportunity to stretch their legs, improve coordination and motor skills, and increase physical fitness. Research has shown that students benefit academically from free play time and physical fitness is an important aspect of educating the "whole child".
Recess allows students to interact with each other and develop critical social skills, which helps keep them engaged and eager to learn at school!
While waiting their turn, students learn the values of cooperation, patience, and sportsmanship. These are skills that will serve them well throughout their time at our school and later in life. Who knows, a student who gets on a tricycle today could be one of Team USA's olympic cyclists tomorrow!
