I teach Early Childhood Special Education in a "Blended Model" classroom for Chicago Public Schools. My classroom serves children who are 3-5 years old. Children qualify for our program based on academic need or because they already have a diagnosed disability. We currently serve 19 children in a full day program.
Everyone deserves a reward for a job well done! I try to do "Treasure Chest" as often as possible. This is an exciting opportunity for the children and it is a very big deal if they earn a reward from the treasure chest. Prizes from the "Treasure Chest" are not given out every day. I believe in giving treasure chest out on a "random" basis so that students don't begin to perform only when they believe they are going to get a reward out of it. I do not believe in rewarding children with food, however, it is hard to keep the treasure chest adequately supplied with toys the children wish to work for.
All of my special education students are working on specific goals each quarter based on their Individualized Education Plan. These goals are written specifically for them and when they reach the goal they were supposed to meet it is a very large accomplishment for each of them. Many of my students work for weeks or months on mastering skills that come naturally for many of their same-age peers. When a child works so hard and finally masters a skill, I feel that they deserve a special trip to the treasure chest. Unfortunately, many of these children are still mentally younger than the age of three and therefore need products that are suitable for infants. I have found several items at the Oriental Trading Company that will suit the needs of all children in our class, including those who have special needs.
I can assure you that the students who earn rewards from the treasure chest are going to be amazed when they see that they get to choose their own bubbles in the shape of zoo animals and fish. They also will love to choose from beach balls, bendable monkeys, and fish necklaces. I hope that you can help put some excitement back in our treasure chest. After all, tremendous effort does deserve the chance to pick from a “Tremendous Treasure Chest.”
