Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a Title I School in Humble ISD. Our school serves over 900 students and 77% of these students are characterized as economically disadvantaged. Our campus has a large Hispanic population and almost half of our students are English Language Learners. Girls make up around 50% of our campus population. When girls are struggling socially and emotionally it looks different then when boys are having difficulties. Girls are often more withdrawn, quiet, distracted, or they are verbally aggressive to other girls. This project would specifically impact girls in the 3rd- 5th grade. We want our girls to feel empowered while becoming strong, kind, and productive citizens. The Humble ISD community and our students were affected by Hurricane Harvey by the loss of possessions or their homes and a delayed school start, and it was an emotionally traumatic event for everyone involved. School is a safe place where we can provide consistency, love, and support. That is why 97% of our students are at school every day!
My Project
We live in an amazing and scary time where 92% of children can be seen on social media by age two, according to Nancy Jo Sales the author of "American Girls: Social Media and the Secret Life of Teenagers." While it is wonderful that social media can connect friends and family from across the country, we live in a time where apps and social media are being accessed by students younger and younger each year. Girls are often the target, and many times the bullies, when it comes to cyberbullying. In addition to social media, print and television media often creates an unattainable view of what a woman should look like, and an unrealistic view of how a woman should act. Girls are turning against each other and participating in more girl drama and idolizing reality stars who often times are not appropriate role models for a growing girl.
We need to change the way girls perceive themselves and empower them to adopt the characteristics of women in history who displayed wisdom, confidence, courage, tenacity, vision, devotion, perseverance, curiosity, authenticity, and selflessness.
Our girls should be aspire to be like Sacagawea, Rosie the Riveter, Amelia Earhart, and Audrey Hepburn. What makes this program unique is that it is written for girls in upper elementary, it is hands-on, culturally sensitive, and gives each girl her own participant set. Grace and Grit's Basic Curriculum includes one curriculum overview, 3 facilitator guides for each group theme, 3 timeline posters, 3 tote bags, permission slips, a post curriculum survey, and certificates of completion. Each participant will have a story and activity journal, pay-it forward cards, illustrated portraits, and a letter from the founder. Help us start our Grace and GRIT Journey.
