We are a Leader in Me Lighthouse school. Every day we are teaching our students to become better leaders. We live along the Gulf Coast of Alabama, so the environment is especially important to me, and I am trying my best to instill in my students how important it is that we take care of our surrounding environment. We have a school garden and outdoor classroom and well as many recycling initiatives. My students love getting to do so much hands-on learning!
My Project
For our Earth Day celebration 3 years ago, our students planted over 200 Crype Myrtle trees along our school property. Since then we have continued to add many native and fruit bearing trees around our outdoor classroom. Each year we spend a lot of time and money putting pine straw around our trees and then the city mowers just come and mow right through it. My students have learned about the importance of protecting trees from the harsh sun that will dry out the roots and also the overgrowth of weeds that will steal nutrients from our trees. We want our trees to grow big and beautiful. My students and I think that these tree rings are our best option for taking care of our trees. My garden club students are eagerly awaiting the arrival of these tree rings so they can get hand-on with our trees. They love being outside and getting to learn by getting dirty rather than just read about the environment in a book.
