Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This is my second year teaching Algebra to 9th graders at an alternative high school in an urban city just outside of Boston. Of the students at this school 83% come from low income families, there is a 30% drop-out rate and a 72% attendance rate. The reason most of these students are at an alternative school is because of their poor attendance, poor grades or behavior problems. That being said, the majority of them are good kids. A lot of them come from homes where getting an education isn’t a priority.

In my classes my favorite lessons to teach and plan are on scatter plots and lines of best fit. The reason this is my favorite topic to teach is because my students get to conduct their own experiments, record the data and find the relationship between the two variables. They seem to learn best when they are doing hands on activities, and they are really motivated too. In the past I've had students measure their feet and their palms and find the relationship between the two. Another time we made "super frogs" out of origami paper and attached different numbers of paper clips to them to see how the different weights affected how far the frogs jumped. We ended up learning a lot about scatter plots, about frogs, and about origami.

This year I want to try a new experiment- using trebuchets. What better way to motivate students then to let them catapult objects across the room?! They will experiment with different weights, to see how far they can launch objects. Then they will record their data, and create tables and scatter plots. Not only will the students be building the model trebuchets on their own, but we will learn how they work, and how they were used through history. My students won't just be exploring concepts in math, they will be learning about physics, history and model making. I am requesting on behalf of my students 15 model trebuchet kits along with large grid paper, markers, and tape so they can create charts and tables to display and compare their data with each other.

Please help my students to get the most out of math class, not to mention have fun in the process! Your donation will give my students the motivation they need to be successful in class, and in life. This project is about more than just launching projectiles- its the ultimate learning experience!
