Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our students need something to do after school. Something to keep them active. Something to improve their problem solving ability as well as their self-confidence. In school they need to learn to have patience, be less judgmental of others, and work together to achieve success. A traverse wall in our gymnasium could provide the students with an opportunity to increase their: strength, endurance, cardiovascular fitness, balance, flexibility, and coordination. The wall will also provide them with mental skills such as: courage, will power, positive risk taking, and perseverance. (The perfect mind-body connection!) The wall could be utilized during physical education classes, by the classroom teachers to improve team-building skills, and when school is over for an after school activity. The children at our school spend a lot of time indoors, especially in the winter. Busy streets, crime, and lack of playgrounds make it difficult to be active outside even on a nice day. I have seen children fall in love with climbing. This has led them to be more interested in exploring nature, where climbing originated. Other outdoor activities like hiking, camping, and canoeing can lead a child to an active lifestyle as an adult, and an appreciation of the natural world outside the concrete and pollution of the city. * Students are never more than a few feet off the floor as they traverse the wall. No ropes, harnesses or other special equipment are needed.
