My students need a traveling zoo to come to the classroom for a class trip. Most of my students are in wheelchairs, and, due to medical issues, cannot go on class trips.
A typical day in my classroom is made up of caring for medically fragile students while teaching them the curriculum. My students are confined to wheelchairs and have limited communication skills. We cover every subject area and differentiate instruction. We use hands-on materials and picture books.
Our school is a special needs school.
My class is a group of 12 middle school and high school students ranging in age from 12 to 21 years old in 12:1:4 classifications. My students are in wheelchairs and some get fed by tubes. We have nurses in the classroom to take care of the students. We use different types of communication devices that allow the students to communicate.
I have worked in this school for 13 years, the first 10 as a paraprofessional and then as a teacher. I have a special place in my heart for this population. I worked in a law firm for 10 years but knew I had a calling to be a teacher. I try my best to make every lesson fun and exciting and on the students' individual levels. I try to use informational text as well as hand-on materials, pictures and videos to teach the same lesson so that I can reach every student. I have tried to get my class to go on a trip for years but without any luck. I hope that you can help us have our first class trip.
My Project
The Staten Island Zoo offers a traveling zoo which will bring animals into the classroom. The students can explore the wonders of the natural world right in the classroom. The students can do hands-on, interactive learning. Having the zoo come to the classroom would immerse the students in the world of science, math, reading, and other subjects. Zoos do much more than provide recreation; they teach the students about the importance of nature and the impact on the environment. They provide scientists with opportunities to study wild animals and they are also important because thousands of species of wild animals are in danger of becoming extinct. Saving these endangered species is one of the purposes of modern zoos.
Due to medical reasons, my students cannot go on class trips.
They see many of their friends going on class trips to restaurants, stores, and recreational facilities. I would like for my students to experience a class trip, but going out of the building would be out of the question. Having the traveling zoo come to the classroom will be the first class trip my class has taken and an experience of a lifetime.
