I am a Social Studies teacher at a rural school in Sampson County, North Carolina. Sampson County is a low wealth county, therefore we are limited with the types of resources we can provide our students. This project is designed to help the students visualize important events and people throughout history. Most students understand events better if they can see what is being discussed. By using clips from a collection of videos and DVDs I hope to bring history alive to the students in my classroom. To conduct this project I would need a selection of videos and DVDs and the equipment to show them on. With this proposal I am trying to secure the equipment I need to show the videos I already have in my personal collection.
During the span of a year I teach 150 students. This project would be an on-going project so my students would benefit each year from this project. My goal is to expand my students' understanding of history and the social sciences. Upon successful completion of high school a student should be able to analyze change and continuity over time, organize historical evidence, and ask and answer critical questions about the past. My students would also be able to demonstrate knowledge of people and events across time, to be used as building blocks for critical interpretation and understanding of the past. Finally, my students should be able to identify the enduring themes of the historical experiences and discuss history as a discipline. By using this program it is my goal to equip the students with additional tools and information to accomplish my goals for them. This project will provide materials that will be used for many years to follow. The students' needs will be met by this project because this program will serve to reinforce the lessons taught in the classroom by giving visual and audio supplements to the textbook, and my lecture. This project is designed to assist the visual learner and also assist with the student who is less proficient in reading such as learning disabled or language disadvantaged students. This project will help my to leave no child behind.
