Traveling Through Historical Fiction

My students need to read complex texts, and different genres of literacy. They are excited to read "Aurore of the Yukon" a story inspired by true events.

My Students

As Nelson Mandela once said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." I teach fabulous fourth graders in an inner-city school. My diverse population of students come from a low-income, high poverty district. All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of our students have experienced trauma in their life.

Despite many hardships, my students come to school every day ready and eager to learn.

It is important that my students are engaged and excited about learning! They want to be in school because they want to learn so they can be successful in life.

My Project

At our school, we have started reading read-aloud units to prepare students to read complex texts. We are currently focusing on Realistic Fiction. A spark was ignited when they read the book "Shiloh." They didn't want to stop reading and were sad when the book ended. We are excited to start reading a book in a different genre.

Through these read-aloud units, we are teaching students how to gain a deeper understanding of complex texts, and hopefully foster a love for reading.

"Aurore of the Yukon: A Girl's Adventure in the Klondike Gold Rush" will expose our students to an exciting, historical fiction book. This unit moves across our curriculum, and ties in nicely with our social studies unit on Canada.
