Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Our students come from one of the poorest and crime-ridden communities in Washington, DC. Even though they are only a few blocks from the Nation's Capital, they still experience some of the hardest things that children can face. Death, homelessness, and abuse are just a few things that our students come across daily, but this does not deter them from setting out to receive the best education possible. They work hard and give their all every day when they step into the safe space they call school.

"It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men- Frederick Douglass".

At our school, 100% of students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch, with one of the highest at-risk population in Washington, DC. Despite the obstacles that our students face, recent data has shown that our scholars have made substantial growth, having the highest level of growth in our entire school. We would like to continue to close the achievement gap and you can help make that possible. You can help us truly live by our motto: Excellence, Every Child, Every Day.

My Project

In this day and age, it is important that our future leaders understand the world around them and are up to date with what is taking place. Time For Kids is a weekly magazine subscription that not only provides high-interest articles on national and world events, but it also creates an opportunity for students to have discourse, develop problem-solving ideas and create a well-informed learner.

An educated, enlightened and informed population is one of the surest ways of promoting the health of a democracy -Nelson Mandela.

As an educator, I am surprised that some of our scholars do not understand what is taking place in the city that they reside in and the world around them. During class, we normally hold discussions about what is happening in the world and connect our learning to the real world. Time for Kids will provide students with endless opportunities to learn more about the world and collaborate to become agents of change. In addition, the weekly newspapers will be used to build up their writing and public speaking skills. In the past, we have used the articles to create small fundraising and awareness literature. We have also used the articles as a research tool to promote evidence-based debates and encourage students to cite evidence to support their opinion (which is a major Reading skill). I strongly believe your donations will help our students not only grow their Reading skills but enhance the most important traits of citizen: compassion and enlightened. Thank you so much in advance for your wonderful donation.
