Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a third grade teacher at PS 75 in Bushwick, Brooklyn. We are considered a low-performing, hard to staff public school, where over 90% of our students receive free lunch.
The third grade Social Studies curriculum includes cultures from around the world. I would like to actively engage my students by immersing them in a culture from each continent. I plan to put together 7 activity boxes (1 for each continent) filled with objects from each continent for my students to explore. These activity boxes are to be used to pique their interest as well as to aid them in their discovery and research of cultures different from their own.
I would like to purchase videos, puppets instruments and books for each activity box to represent the 7 continents. Lastly, I would like to purchase a few children's atlases to enhance the students' knowledge of geography and teach research skills.
These materials will enrich my students learning opportunities, as well as provide a fun way to learn new and challenging material. Other third grade teachers in my building will also have access to these activity boxes. An added plus will be that these materials will be used for many years to come.
