My students need bins to help us organize our materials to prepare us for summer vacation and to send book boxes home with students that will travel throughout the summer.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For a summer project and to keep pushing summer reading, we will be delivering book boxes to students throughout the summer as a sort of traveling library! Often reading plummets during the summer for our students as their parents work and they lack resources at home or travel to a library.

The students come from all different types of backgrounds, varying locations within the city, various socioeconomic backgrounds with all kinds of skin colors.

The variety and diversity in our school is impressive, and it shows in our students' respect and acceptance for their classmates and greater community. Our school embraces Hispanic culture and encourages diversity. While we are a low-income school, the wonderful and dedicated staff and students allow us to reach a culture of achievement despite the challenges our families face each day. Unfortunately, we lack many resources to help our students continue to succeed. With your help, we can continue to push our students toward higher education and greater opportunities than their parents had. We hope to help our students break the cycle of poverty, gang violence, drug use, and give them every choice in what they want to be when they grow up.

My Project

We will use these materials to store books that we have gathered from volunteers from a local church as well as those found and purchased by teachers. The items we need are simply strong, clean, plastic containers to organize the books and keep them stored when they are at different families' homes. They need to be waterproof, pet proof and keep our libraries in order during transportation as well as during use. We also need a few small storage items and file folders to organize the paperwork for this project. Since our school has no additional budget for this project besides donations, we are doing our best to keep it as simplistic as possible. We will have a summer schedule to send a big box of books to different families in our school that sign up for them. We also need one pencil/marker organizer to send art supplies with the books, as many of our students do not have simply crayons, scissors and craft tools at home. We will send craft items in the requested storage drawer.

This will make a huge difference for our students and their families!

They will continue to read with their families and have resources to keep their reading levels and grade level stable throughout the summer. I hope this aids in their development and keeps them on track when they return the next year. Most students from our school district lack access to summer reading programs and books so we want to print the books straight to their homes to break that cycle.
