My students need 10 backpacks, 30 science experiment books, 10 lab coats, 10 pairs of goggles, 10 notebooks, and supplies to create 10 "Traveling Scientist" backpacks.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
"Traveling Scientist" backpacks let our students take science out of the classroom and into the home. We are a Title I school in a high poverty area. We are also a science magnet school with an "A" grade.
By creating these portable science labs, our students can share their interest in science with their families. Each student will have the opportunity to take the backpack home for a week and conduct a scientific experiment at home.
To create our traveling scientist backpacks, we need 10 backpacks, 10 lab coats, 10 goggles, science experiment books that students can use for reference as well as other supplies to enhance the learning process. These resources will allow the students to conduct simple science experiments at home and then recreate them in the classroom in a presentation for the rest of the class. Not only will the students learn about science but they will have the chance to refine their oral presentation skills.
In our global economy, we need students who are well versed in science to compete with the rest of the world. Science is a critical area in our curriculum. We need to find ways to enhance the program and increase student achievement. Real life applications and hands of learning opportunities make learning fun and knowledge lasting.
