Help me give my students new books, book totes, and scholastic magazines at their reading level to help improve reading skills and provide them the opportunity to practice those skills at home as well as in the classroom.
I have 11 third and fourth graders in a rural Alaska, off the road system, that love to be out of doors and moving around. My students look forward to coming to school and learning new things. The students live in a subsistence village and are accustomed to being very active in their home, community, and school. This community is a very close-knit community, and the school provides important services for the families and community as a whole. Hunting, fishing, gathering, running around, and playing basketball are all activities that are a part of their daily lives.
My Project
My students are starting to really be interested in reading, but our classroom library only provides a small variety of books that are on different reading levels. These materials would make it possible for my students to all have books to read at their own levels. They would also be able to take books home and practice their reading skills there as well as in the classroom. These materials would help my students continue to improve their reading skills as well as their reading comprehension, which would help improve other skills in multiple subjects like math, science, and social studies. My students and I would be very happy and grateful for these new classroom resources.
