My students live in rural North Carolina and very few have traveled outside the state or to another country. Our school is in a small community and one third of the students receive free lunch. They are always very excited about art and doing 3-dimensional projects, especially clay. The students enjoy learning about other countries and doing art projects inspired by other cultures. These students will learn geography as well as art when they participate in these unique international projects.
My Project
In this project, the students will learn about art around the world. The students will start by designing a passport that I will stamp each week as we do art from each country. We will start by traveling to Mexico where students will do a folk painting on brown paper. The next stop will be a visit to Guatemala where they will create a clay bird with feathers and beads. The third country will be Egypt where we will create a foil etching. Then it is on to India to make a clay elephant with a beautiful headdress. The fifth stop will be Nigeria where students will draw beautiful dancers and paint their colorful dresses. The next country will be Australia where students will create a dot painting of one of their native animals. The last stop will be China where students will create a panda bear mug out of clay.
