Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Coaching in a low income/high poverty area for the past 5 years, I have seen first hand how big of an impact sports can have in a child's life. Athletics is a great teacher, that helps students learn life lessons that they do not always get at home. An opportunity that can turn an at-risk youth into a college-bound scholar.
Our sports program is one of the few chances many of our students get to live like a normal teenager.
A large number of our students have begun working to help with household bills; as well as spending a very large amount of time raising younger siblings. These students care so much about their families at home, and participating in sports gives us a chance to show them how much we care about them as part of our family.
My Project
Equipment for our sports programs at U.S. Grant are hard to come by. However, personal school supplies for our students are even more difficult to come by. One of the main challenges we face in educating a low income community is having to interact with families that are unable to support their students education through school supplies and basic educational resources.
Let's give this team backpacks they can carry to victory.
These backpacks would be a great way to supplement these students resources for the basketball season. Give them the opportunity to carry around important equipment and give them a chance to feel the commitment of our basketball family.
