My students enjoy truly enjoy Spanish as a second language and I enjoy teaching them! Many of my students are highly motivated to learn Spanish as a second language. Many of them already speak two other languages at home, and understand the value of bilingualism.
My students are very creative.
Many play music and enjoy art. They are very receptive to learning a language, especially when it is taught in a creative manner. We play games in class, create short skits, sing in Spanish, and draw.
I want to challenge them in Spanish by finding engaging reading materials.
My Project
My Spanish as a second language class is a class taught primarily in Spanish. My students already have the basics of present tense Spanish under their belts after 6 months with me. They are able to read short stories in Spanish. I am creating a library of easy reader novels and comic type books in Spanish. These books are appealing to middle school students and will help them excel at reading, writing and speaking Spanish.
I want to create an engaging Spanish library for my students, as this is a gateway to appreciating and enjoying learning a second language.
Many of them are avid English readers, and therefore enjoy reading in Spanish. In a language classroom, all children develop their skills at a different place, and having novels of different types and subject matters allows them to work independently and read about subject matter they enjoy.
I have previewed each of these novels, and know that my students will enjoy them. Latin American culture is woven into some of the novels. Humor is also used to teach the language in the comic book style books. These books are written specifically for teenagers, and therefore I know they will interest my seventh graders.
