My students need flexible seating options such as a bench and pillows to make a comfortable reading center that encourages a love and appreciation for reading.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students attend a Title I school where 100% of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. Although they face many life challenges, they come to school ready to learn. My students are resilient, determined, funny, and loving children. They are amazing students who will grow into amazing adults, with the love and guidance experienced in my classroom. As a teacher I strive to build relationships that hopefully my students will remember throughout their lives. My hope for all of my students is that I will have a lasting impact on their lives as my teachers have had on my life.
My Project
A large percentage of my students struggle with reading comprehension and fluency, which deters them from opening a book. Struggling with reading impacts their performance in all subject areas. Creating a flexible seating options such as a bench, bean bags and pillows will make a comfortable reading center that will encourage a love and appreciation for reading. It is my ultimate goal as a teacher, to foster a lifelong love for reading by creating a comfortable safe reading center. My students love when we read stories together on the carpet. I would love to have a nice area specifically designated for reading books. Increasing students’ reading comprehension and fluency will improve their self esteem and academic performance in all subject areas. I believe improving academic performance will also improve behavior and emotional struggles.
