Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine a K-8 public charter school with a proven record of success in serving low-income students. A formerly abandoned historic school building in one of the city's most impoverished communities. In the heart of that building, a bright new school library. What's missing from this picture? Books!
As a Title 1 school, nearly 90% of our students come from families living in poverty, but that doesn't stop them from being curious, enthusiastic learners.
No matter how difficult their home lives may be, so many enter our doors each morning bursting with questions and ready to grow. Our goal is to give them the tools they need to succeed in high school, college and beyond, and we know that reading widely is a keystone to that success. We also know that if we don't get books in their hands at school, it may never happen. However, our current collection is small and comprised mainly of donations of library's discards; many books are outdated or in poor condition. Now, as we prepare to move into a newly-renovated building and expand our student body, our students more than ever need a plethora of high-quality reading materials that not only support curriculum standards but also get them excited about reading.
My Project
Most of our students have never traveled out of our city, but the books we are requesting will bring the world in its glorious diversity right into our new library. Our students will use these books not only to build their social studies knowledge but also to develop their 21st century skills: evaluating and analyzing information, comparing and contrasting, making global connections, and contributing their own voices to the discussion. Our goal is to bring the social studies curriculum into the library to engage students in inquiry-based discovery, so they can learn how to access information at the same time that they practice higher-level thinking skills and build content literacy. These books, with their engaging illustrations and high-interest topics, will draw students to in-depth research and exploration. Many of these resources focus on finding the common thread across an array of cultures and places, empowering students to see patterns, sort data, and draw conclusions.
By filling our shelves with high-quality non-fiction books, you are giving our students the means to practice reading for information.
This life-long skill will serve them in any walk of life, setting them on the path to a successful, fulfilling contribution to society. By putting books in their hands, you put the world in their hands.
