I teach Kindergarten at a Title I primary building, in a rural district in SW Missouri. It prides itself on academic achievement and a sense of community. My students come from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. I have 16 Kindergarten students who are very confident, eager to be involved, and want to and can accept a great deal of responsibility.
My Kinders like going places and doing things, such as working on projects, experimenting, and working with others.
My students are growing in their ability and desire to work cooperatively with others. They want to be industrious and successful. Their combination of a “can do” attitude and their cooperation and responsibility make them a delight to teach and work with.
My Project
My first goal in my classroom set-up is ensuring our space is a safe and comfortable learning environment for every child who walks through the door. An important part of making this happen involves being intentional about the physical environment of my classroom, such as the floor plan and furniture. We have flexible seating in our classroom, and we need new group tables to give students more space to move around the room as they actively learn and explore.
Research shows that students who work together in groups not only get better grades, but have a higher respect for their learning and education; many are continuing their education onto college.
Students learning and working in a group setting can develop better social skills needed for their future careers. Most employers seek employees with previous teamwork experience. These group tables will strengthen our classroom community by providing authentic opportunities for students to interact with each other and further develop essential life skills, such as cooperation and teamwork.
