Each year I find that students are faced with numerous stressors due to the challenges of performing well academically and outside forces beyond their control. Our student clientele consists of non-traditional teens who are at risk for not completing high school requirements with some having limited resources and minimal support from home.
My Project
In order to successfully empower all students for a lifetime of success, these underserved students need access to quality, high-interest literature they can choose to supplement the curriculum and fulfill personal needs. There is currently no library on our campus, so students are not able to access self-selected reading material. Students who are deemed at-risk, as these students are, need access to a variety of reading materials that they can choose themselves and access to an inviting location in which they are able to feel safe and comfortable. Studies indicate that school libraries help all students academically, regardless of other school variables.
Due to the significant impact of school libraries on students, it is crucial that we provide a library that is well-stocked with a variety of books and is aesthetically inviting for students who have significant needs in terms of academic, social-emotional, and relational support.
Our students need to know that being at an alternative school does not have to result in limited experiences and resources that are less than. Donating to our project will allow our at-risk students to experience an inviting space to take them away from the challenges of their lives.
