Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach social studies to 4th and 5th graders to get them prepared for the 5th grade social studies test. This is only the second year that my school has a 5th grade.
The problem that I am presently having is that I am a social studies teacher and I am responsible for not only preparing students for the 5th grade social studies test, but also do staff development for 4th and 5th grade teachers.
I frequently model Document Based Questions and/or model essay writing for the social studies test by using the overhead projector. By modeling document based questions on the overhead, I am able to teach students about how to scrutinize documents and echo the questions in the answer. I am also able to teach my students about how to write a essay in the most effective way possible. I teach them how to write the introduction and how to use the historical background in your introduction. I explain to students that each question that needs to be answered is a paragraph and how to write the closing paragraph. Additionally, sometimes I put a document on the overhead and we practice just using our prior knowledge and captions to analyze different documents.
I am having difficulty getting transparencies to use for my social studies lessons. They are too expensive and my school says that with all the budget cuts, they are unable to provide me with anymore transparencies. I really feel bad, because to this point using the overhead to prepare students for the test has been fun for students as well as effective in their learning and now because of money my students will lose their teacher teaching them in the best way possible.

It also allows for me to teach them critical thinking skills, which my students will need in all subject areas and throughout their life.
