Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever visited a foreign country and did not understand the language at all? Or maybe you know someone whose native language is not English. Understanding and learning the English language is a constant struggle and frustration that my students are facing each day.
My students are in Kindergarten.
They are part of a charter school in Long Island City that focuses on choral music. Currently the school is growing year by year. We are a kindergarten through fifth-grade school that will eventually reach the eighth-grade. We have a very diverse student population.
My Project
This project includes resources that will help my English Language Learners learn and incorporate the English language into their daily lives. One 'Vocabulary Photo Card Library' will give my students a great jump start into basic key vocabulary. A 'Positional Words Resource Box' will help my students learn the differences between tricky positional words. Three sets of 'Labeling Pockets' in various sizes will help me to create resources that can be preserved for as long as we need them. Keeping our materials organized in 'Magnetic Folder Bins' will help for easier sorting and management. Two 'Magnetic Write and Wipe Boards' will help me model my lessons when I am pulling a small group to work on the carpet or at the conference table.
Our classroom is filled with the majority of students where English is not their first language.
Many students speak only a little bit of English if anything at all. My goal is to be able to pull out small groups of students during my prep periods to teach them English. These resources will help make my hopes, that all my students will leave my class in June speaking English, come true.
