Math and Science can be challenging subjects for some students, especially for English Language Learners who have not yet acquired the academic vocabulary necessary for successful learning. The document camera will provide visual elements to lessons to help translate complex concepts.
Overall, our school involves the students in meaningful school experiences that promote the joy of learning while addressing students' individual needs.
Our school has a rich tradition of delivering a strong academic curriculum to a diverse student population, especially new immigrants from all over the world who are English Language Learners. According to the most recent data from 2009-10, our school serves 665 students and 85% of students receive full or partially subsidized federal lunches The students also are from diverse ethnic backgrounds, including African American (11%), Chinese (59%), Latino (13%), Other Non-White (13%) and White (3%).
My Project
The document camera will allow me to share images, which will help eliminate the need for expensive multiple copies of classroom materials. It will also be useful for solving equations, showing dissections, and highlighting textbook passages. This technology is easy to use and integrate into my existing lessons. I have already received training on its use, and there is no need for expensive technical support. One of the best features of the document camera is when I connected it to a computer. It can act as a scanner so I can place items under the document camera and use them in class that day and "save" the image for future use.
Some of the features that are the most exciting is the ability to share images on the classroom website where the students can use them for homework and parents can "see" what the students are learning.
I look forward to sharing the saved images with students so they can be incorporated into their PowerPoint Presentations and Windows Movie Maker for class projects. The images will also be used in end of year programs, classroom review and back to school nights.
