Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 8th-grade cluster is made up of students from a wide variety of backgrounds. In my district close to 60% of students receive free or reduced lunch, this means that many do not have the basic supplies that we take for granted.
Like all 8th graders, my kids love to create and explore.
They are most invested in their own learning when they have a hand in creating the assignment.
Connecting math, science and art is so important and helps kids explore the concepts on a deeper level.
My Project
Teaching geometry is always a lot of fun. The kids get to explore the shapes while learning about transformations, reflections and rotations.
Of course everything is easier with the right tools!
For my students those tools include protractors, rulers, compasses and tracing paper. I like to make sure these tools are always available to the students both in class and during homeroom.
I work hard to set up a student centered classroom, where the students are provided with a variety of resources to use at all times. Unlike the more traditional classroom, the students decide which tool they want to use. So, for example, if they are doing a 90 degree rotation, they can use a protractor, tracing paper or grid. Unfortunately, without access to the tools, the students have a limited choice.
I have also included colored pencils in this project. The colored pencils will be a valuable resource when the student's create tessellations and when writing notes in their journals. Finally, as a math teacher, one can never have enough pencils. Having extra pencils in the class ultimately means that my students' work is neater and easier to read because they can quickly fix any mistakes they make as they go without cross-outs and scribbles.
