My students love to read. They don't have typical opportunities like most. My students have difficulties reading and more so with comprehension. What is so wonderful about my students is that they don't let those difficulties stop them. They are always ready to read.
My students range from 3rd to 5th graders.
They have such a strong desire to achieve their goals, but reading and comprehension difficulties get in their way. My students are determined not to let their difficulties with reading define them. They are always striving to better themselves.
My school is in a rural community. We have about 88% of our student population on free and reduced lunch. Several of our students do not have many of the opportunities that other students have. To help level the playing field, I do whatever needs to be done to get the materials needed for my students.
My Project
The Storyworks magazine is designed to help students meet the Common Core by combining thrilling complex texts with rigorous support materials to build skills in every strand of the ELA standards. For this project I am requesting twenty subscriptions to Storyworks for Grades 3-6.
All genres are covered in the issues as well as supporting videos. The magazines are in print as well as online. I envision my students using their iPads in the reading center learning about new and interesting concepts. I can see my students engaged in the stories. For my students that have difficulty reading, the technology is taking away that barrier. They will be answering questions that deeper their understanding of the content as well as working in groups on various activities.

These are students who yearn to learn, but due to their circumstances, do not have the opportunities of most. They get all that they get from school. By providing rich, interesting texts, students can use their imaginations to step out of their worlds and experience new and exciting things. The materials that we put into their hands will have a tremendous impact on their learning and therefore their lives.
