Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is made up of hard-working and diverse students. Our student body has a range of students from myriad economic and sociocultural backgrounds. They enter my classroom at varied levels of traditional reading and writing skills; many are advanced for 6th grade standards, reading at and beyond high school levels, while some are still below basic and working hard to attain grade level mastery.

Our students show P.R.I.D.E (Preparedness, Respect, Integrity, Determination, and Empathy).

I see my students live out these virtues in the classroom and on campus daily. They come prepared to work hard, to use determination to work through learning challenges, and to show respect and empathy to their classmates through respectful language, kind gestures, and supportive peer feedback.

In my classroom, students are readers, writers, and thinkers. We are working to remind each other that no goal or dream is too small and that the English classroom is a place to write our stories and read the world.

My Project

At Dana Middle School, our English Department is adopting a reader's and writer's workshop curriculum to personalize literacy instruction. We believe that the ongoing changes to our lessons will continue to give students ownership over their learning and show them that they have a voice and a personal space in the classroom.

We are using flexible seating and expanding our libraries to give students more opportunities to choose how they learn best and to seek out books that they are excited to read within their reading range.

The Portable Recliner Chairs will give students floor seating and movement options, which many of them crave for both independent and group work. Items like the desk bands give my active students a way to move while they learn, so that they can increase their focus without disturbing others. The books on this wish list were all highly recommended by my students last year, so the new books will keep my current students excited about book choices available to them for their independent reading.
