Help me give my students ETA hand2mind Daily Math Fluency Kit (Grade 4) to have my students have hands on math using math talk, strings and guided math practice.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is located in Georgia. All of our students receive free lunch. Many of them have no homes, they live in nearby motels. I service students with special needs in a small group setting. Because of their environmental setting and deficit of skills, their self-esteem and socialization skills are at very minimal. They come to school expecting teachers to care, love, and provide for their needs.
My special need students are supposed to be in a place where they can experience hands-on learning to increase their academic achievement.
When I start the lesson with the text book, my students felt it is too much to learn as the materials overwhelm their ability level. As a professional in education field, I have to break down the tasks and help them to understand and apply it in their everyday life. Due to limited time to teach each concept, I have to rely on kits developed by educational personnel to apply it in my class for quick and easy lesson implementation.
My Project
The use of math talk is almost a daily routine in my classroom, especially in math. Using the hands on math, students transform their hands on experiences to logical and critical thinking skills. The math fluency kit allows me to see exactly where their understanding is and helps me to breakdown further to better understanding. What becomes a problem is the fact that we don't have enough materials for immediate use in class. By having this hand2mind fluency kit, students will be able to solve problems easily and focus on increasing their learning!
