My students need capes, masks, handkerchiefs, umbrellas, gloves, tiaras, muscles, and one faux leather jacket for our upcoming forays into the cinematic universe.
I teach advanced English to high school students in upstate New York. Like so many communities across the country, our area has endured significant economic and demographic changes over the last couple of decades. Nonetheless, our families and students are resilient, determined, and eager to make the world a better place.
My students are writers and readers who will soon enter the world of college and work.
They want to make their mark in the world, and it's my job to prepare them.
My Project
Whether I'm teaching advanced English or Comic Books & Superheroes, there is always room for performance in the classroom. From Caesar dying at the hand of his senators to Thanos rising after the fall of the Avengers, donning costumes and performing scenes always breathes life into a text.
We are looking for props and costumes to enhance our in-school performances of Macbeth, Othello, and various superhero trailers.
The handkerchief is for the beautiful Desdemona, Othello's wife. It's probably the most crucial prop in the story as it leads directly to her murder.
The umbrellas are for the Birnam Wood scene of Macbeth. The small umbrellas double as tree branches as Macduff sneaks up on Macbeth.
The superhero costumes will serve us well as we re-create various scenes from the MCU and the DCEU.
Performance is magical. I teach English and incorporate performance as often as possible. It is the one thing that pulls everyone out of their daily universe by giving all students the opportunity to imagine new worlds and new possibilities.
