Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are inquisitive, engaging fourth graders. They are curious students who love to ask questions and extend their learning. Our classroom is a warm and welcoming community of learners. These amazing young people bring their cultural backgrounds into our class of learners to create a diverse classroom community.
Our 3rd through 8th graders and their families choose to attend this school to be a part of our wonderful, small school learning environment.
I teach at a public magnet school with fewer than 400 students in 3rd-8th grades, which provides a unique opportunity for upper elementary and middle school students to share the same campus and school community. The majority of our students are from low income families with some parents working long hours or struggling to find work.
This also means some students are homeless and live in motels or in shared housing with other families, making it hard for students to get a good night’s sleep and stay focused in school. Despite these challenges our students maintain positive attitudes and try their best at school.
My Project
I am requesting two flower-shaped activity tables for our classroom. Students would have additional seating options to choose from instead of our old desks, which are three times as old as my students! The tables would provide an easy gathering place for group assignments because tables are more conducive to collaboration and group work than desks. The new work spaces would have a magical effect and transform our classroom environment for the better by helping students focus on learning. Providing a supportive classroom environment for my students is very important to me.
These activity tables are safe and sturdy pieces of furniture that would replace some of our old desks, which are approaching 27 years old with worn out and missing laminate edges.
The old desks snag clothes and people's skin, and I am hoping to slowly replace them with new furniture. My students are very fortunate that donors have provided funding already for one table, and I am hopeful we can receive donations for more. This is from the same furniture line so that our new tables will match. New tables will help modernize our classroom in a stylish way while providing a safe and sturdy work surface for my students.
