This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are bright, creative, and unique. I teach science and life skills in a self-contained program for students with disabilities such as autism, intellectual disabilities, developmental delays, etc.

My students are in the final stages of their public school education and getting ready to transition into adulthood.

It is my duty and honor to help them bridge this challenging time and prepare them for their adult lives.

My Project

My students face many challenges on a daily basis; their disabilities being just one of them. In addition to learning how to navigate the world and transitioning into adulthood, many of my students also face poverty, socioeconomic disadvantages, and a lack of equity in the resources available to them. Education is meant to be the great equalizer, the vessel in which all individuals have an equal opportunity to excel despite their circumstances. Unfortunately, through my role as an educator, I have discovered that even education is not equal. A student's educational opportunities and resources can vary greatly based on the resources of the community and school district in which they reside. Mediums like DonorsChoose make a difference in providing access to resources that would not otherwise be possible.

My goal is to make the impossible, possible.

Virtual reality allows my students the ability to be set free from many of the real-world restraints and experience things they might not have otherwise. For example, virtual reality will give students the opportunity to experience realistic virtual field trips anywhere in the world; they can walk the streets of Venice or explore the world's greatest landmarks. I can take my students into the solar system to discover planets and stars. Virtual reality in the classroom takes everyday education just a bit closer to the fun and immersive experiential education envied by anyone who ever watched Mrs. Frizzle in "The Magic School Bus."

My students, who face many challenges in their day-to-day life, will be able to have a taste of experiences that would have otherwise been impossible, with the addition of a virtual reality headset and accessories to our classroom.
