I need these books to foster and sustain training for student and staff emotional support through an ongoing professional development for all staff in my school system in an effort to educate the whole child.
Yancey County Schools has identified a need for community resilience model training, using Reconnect for Resilience which is both a preventive and a responsive intervention that seeks to improve youth behaviors by providing emotional regulation skills that can help all school community members bring negative emotions back into balance. Based on the information detailed below, our district has current and ongoing needs for an evidence-based training in the areas of applied neuroscience, emotional regulation, and shame resiliency.
Yancey County is a small, rural county nestled in the mountains of NC.
It is the most mountainous county in North Carolina and was the last county in the state to receive a four-lane road. The county’s mountainous terrain has contributed to our limited economic development and, like most of Appalachia, Yancey County residents are poor or of low-income. The average annual salary being $27,365 compared to the average state salary of $46,772. There are currently 2150 students enrolled in Yancey County Schools. The students of our school system are from low income rural areas.
It is well-documented that bullying and the experience of a personal loss are precursors of school violence, as well as self-medicated means that are harmful and adverse to student health. With this in mind, our goal is to not only respond to unaddressed trauma, but to teach tools that can be used in school settings to approach trauma with less punishment and isolation and more connection and classroom community-building. In addition, when there is a common language about trauma and resiliency, we anticipate that teachers will respond to difficult classroom behavior more effectively and be better equipped to provide students in crisis with safety and support, as well as access to services when needed. With this professional development and materials we can train all staff on effective ways to address childhood trauma in the classroom.
