Training Students in Marketing and Advertisement Skills
Help me give my students an iPad, Apple Pencil, and SD cards to build their marketing skills as they take photographs and design advertisements to sell their yearbook.
I have the pleasure of teaching math and advising yearbook at an arts high school. My school is unique in that it is dedicated to offering the best possible education in both the arts and academics. What I love most about my school is our school culture.
Students at my school are celebrated for their individuality and encouraged to pursue their passions.
If you walk down the hallways of my school, it wouldn't be suprising to see some students rehearsing for their stage combat class while others have easels set up for an oil painting class. Let's just say that one of our school traditions is to blast "Don't Stop Believing" on the last day of school and even our principal joins the students in standing on the lunch tables to rock out.
My Project
Since my school is only 3 years old, our yearbook program is also only 3 years old. The yearbook staff may be young, but they are highly motivated and passionate about creating a yearbook that represents the school year for ALL students at our school. In July, my staff attended yearbook camp with 60 other schools. They created and presented their ideas and plan for their 2020 yearbook and was awarded for their presentation.
However, yearbook students are often gone unnoticed since the work they do is behind-the-scenes and the students are focused on highlighting other students on campus, not themselves.
My students are so excited to create the yearbook, but we need to make sure people buy the yearbook!
As their adviser, I plan to train the students to market their yearbook regularly through videos and social media. The students will use the iPad to create and edit the advertisements. They will also be able to use the iPad during sales events for online purchases. An Apple Pencil will be particularly handy when my students create gifs for Instagram and Snapchat that their fellow schoolmates can use to further spread awareness of the yearbook on our campus.
The additional classroom supplies will be used both in my yearbook class and math classes. My yearbook students will use the supplies to draft up their layouts and plan out their events. My math students will use the supplies to build on their precision skills, especially with graphing.
