My students come from a wide range of backgrounds and enter my room with a wide range of abilities. Living in a rural town home to a prestigious private college, my students may have PhD parents or they may have parents struggling to make ends meet. My students love to learn and love to feel that they belong.
My kids love to be noticed, to contribute, and to help in any way they can.
Their need to show what they know, to have their voice heard, and to get my attention can sometimes take the class off course. In the end, every student simply wants to know that he or she is valued and respected.
My Project
I have been accepted to the Writing Institute at Teachers College (TC) at Columbia University. This training in the first week of August will raise the level of my teaching of writing using TC's Units of Study in Writing. I teach in a high poverty school and our students need highly trained teachers to give them the greatest opportunities.
This training will allow me to customize lessons for the needs of my students, to hold students accountable for their best work, and to make writing a part of their daily lives.
The training itself will cost $850 and a week of housing at Teachers College will cost $875. I am also looking to offset the cost of a plane ticket from Milwaukee to New York.
I would greatly appreciate any donation that helps to offset this cost. Your donation supports my efforts to provide the highest levels of learning to students in a high-poverty, rural public school.
