My students are special because some are visual learners and need manipulatives for conceptual understanding. Other students are kinesthetic learners and need a multitude of short activities which includes movement. Some of my students have short attention spans and also need a multitude of short activities which allows them to re-focus and maintain interest. My students love learning stations which allows them to move, encounter different learning strategies, and helps provide socializing opportunities. Many of them are literal thinkers and tell it like it is and believe that what you say is as it is stated. We have some humorous situations which makes the environment fun for all.
My school has a diverse population of students with various academic and social needs.
For various academic and social reasons, these students chose an educational environment conducive for their style of learning. Our school's classroom settings are designed for small group learning to include a multitude of learning strategies and include the opportunity for students to work at their own individual pace in various subject areas.
My Project
The products I have selected will allow me to create and develop interesting mathematical learning stations for students to solve mathematical problems. My students enjoy the opportunity to work math problems as they circulate around the room. They can work as individuals or in partner settings to solve problems. It allows them the opportunity to problem-solve in a collaborative effort. Great peer-tutoring opportunities occur while having fun and learning math skills.
These stations are exciting and fun because students aren't sitting at worksheet assignments which can be tedious and boring.
The stations consist of scavenger hunts which one solution to a problem leads to the next problem to solve. The card stock paper, colored posters, and markers are for creating the stations. The tape for posting them along the walls of the classroom, and the clip boards for students to fill in templates with answers to the stations as well as completed work. The remaining materials are to organize the station production throughout the year.
Students love these stations and constantly ask when the next ones will appear in the classroom. Students are self-motivated and far more interested in learning math with this strategy. Amazing to watch as they collaborate and assist each other in learning!
