This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Greetings, DonorsChoose supporters! Our students are adult teachers enrolled in higher education courses to improve how they teach reading to elementary children.
Our new teachers are eager to acquire diverse books from every state in the US that together builds a picture of our real America.
Our teachers benefit from modeled lessons using current literature. Our student teachers will build confidence in teaching reading skills focusing on diversity. Additionally, the students of our adult teachers will receive books in their classrooms.
My Project
Students have participated in the Read Across America for decades now. While the theme was started by Dr. Seuss enthusiasts, we would like to introduce our students to another idea: "Read Across a Diverse America" with a book for every state.
Students will be writing expository narratives comparing how cultures in the different United States are the same and different.
I'm requesting Dumpling Dreams: How Joyce Chen Brought the Dumpling from Beijing to Cambridge, Lulu & Rocky in Milwaukee, Enough! 20 Protestors Who Changed America, Pride: The Story of Harvey Milk and the Rainbow Flag, and Her Fearless Run: Kathrine Switzer’s Historic Boston Marathon. These books are a Part 3 to requests for books that represent social justice, environmental awareness, breaking the norms, adventure, engineering, industrial revolutions, animals, sports and more!
This project is represented in three parts due to the volume of books and costs associated. There will be a group of teachers who prepare and model lessons using these books. After the lessons are modeled, teachers will take these books back to their classrooms to keep and carry on the reading skills knowledge and love for learning.
