Traditional Gong for Middle School Band Students

My Students

As the band teacher at my school, it is my pleasure to be the person who brings music into hundreds of students' lives every day.

One thing all the students in my classroom have in common is a love for band.

My students often lament when their band class is over for the day and tell me that they wish it could be the length of two classes. The students take pride in what they learn and accomplish and enjoy putting on concerts for their families and friends about once per quarter.

My Project

The middle school band students at my school love band, and work their hardest to sound their best in performances. Many pieces for middle school band call for gong, and this would make an important addition to our classroom.

Right now, our school does not own a gong.

When a piece of music calls for gong, we usually have to substitute that sound with a crash, ride, or suspended cymbal. This leaves the students at my school disappointed, because, in their words, "It doesn't sound like the original." While they always try their best and work their hardest, the lack of equipment impedes their performance.

Furthermore, gong is a very common instrument in high school band music that requires specific technique to play correctly. With this gong, I can send the middle schoolers off to high school with a better music education.
