My Students

My average day in the classroom begins when I welcome my eighth grade students, including regular students, special education students and students with emotional needs. I want my students to succeed.

My students like to participate in the school drama club which is why I sponsor this activity.

I teach in a large, diverse, K-8 high poverty school in an urban area of Philadelphia that experiences crime. Our school receives Title I funding, and the entire school is eligible for free breakfast and lunch. The students come to school eager to learn from various living situations such as single parents, foster homes, homeless shelters, or extended family living.

My students are the most eccentric, funny, and smart kids you would ever want to meet. Our skill levels and overall level of support vary by student. Some of my students require additional academic support, and some require additional emotional support. One thing that is universal is our desire to work together.

On the first day of school, we identify ourselves as a family. A family takes care of one another and looks out for one another. This is what we do. We work together to accomplish our goals.

My Project

My students have begun their work that will ensure they meet their goals this year. We have "hit the ground running" (as some would say) and already started working with our texts and materials to reach success. This project is requesting some additional materials that I feel would prove useful as we work towards these goals.

In our classroom, we use the Scholastic Scope magazine; I feel that this additional Scope resource would provide useful texts and lessons for me to utilize as we work in small groups to better meet individual student needs.

Also, the PSSA practice will allow us to continue practicing and learning as we best prepare for success this year. These activities will provide invaluable practice as we continue working towards our financial literacy goals.

Lastly, the crafts requested (hooks, bands, tape) will provide needed enhancements in our classroom to display and organize materials. While the treats and music will add a calming and tasty aspect to our lessons providing a relief to the daily assignments.
