My students need pedometers to track their walking and running at recess. The pedometers will help the students to see how much they have walked or ran and they can add up their miles each day.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school has 420 students and currently houses kindergarten, first grade, early intervention, and functional skills. We have a student population that is 50% Hispanic and 50% Caucasian our SES is 73%.
Our staff have embraced the challenges presented by such a diverse population and want nothing but the best for the Little Chargers.
Our students come from a variety of homes. I have English language learners, special Ed students and a majority of my students qualify for free or reduced lunches! But even while facing all of these challenges, my students love to learn. They love challenges, even though they may not easily conquer them.
Our school believes in a growth mindset and realize that mistakes are the best way to learn. These hard workers are always ready to take on another challenge.
My Project
Our primary school has had a Walking Club at recess for many years. We are proud of our students and love the fact that they enjoy exercise.
Next year we will be a Leader in Me school; one of the 7 habits we will be teaching about is Sharpening the Saw.
One way to sharpen the saw is to EXERCISE.
We have a strong Cross Country program and we encourage goal setting and teamwork. Our Walking Club Coordinator updates us weekly on our state miles ranking. Right now we are in 2nd place for most miles walked in the state of Indiana!
The pedometers will help our students to see how their movements add up. The walking club awards students who walk 50 miles, 100 miles and 150 miles in a school year. Having the pedometers will help my students to track their progress and reach their goal.
Some students have a difficult time reaching a goal, but with daily tracking, their goal will be in their head every day. I plan to have the students keep track of their miles instead of them telling me. This will reinforce addition and graphing standards. I am excited to see how they react when they see their miles adding up!
