Help make learning fun! My students are in desperate need for some games to play during free time and a storage unit to organize them.
My class is comprised of students classified as being on the Autism Spectrum or having Emotional Disturbance.
They attend a Distract 75 school which is entirely comprised of special needs students. They are curious and playful as most first graders, but often lack the tools to interact in cooperative play. Games, while being educational, are also extremely social activities which most special needs children suffer a lack of appropriate turn taking, communication, and cooperative play. With your help, my students can learn to interact in a social manner , giving them life skills which will help them for many years to come.
My Project
Remember playing Shoots and Ladders? Trouble? Or Scrabble? My students have never seen these types of games. My students are in a special education school in Brooklyn, NY. They are curious and playful, but need the resources to play together with games that encourage cooperation and communication. At home, they might play with a hand held video game, but few have spent time practicing spelling with Scrabble or counting with Shoots and Ladders. Our school is located in a neighborhood that is comprised of lower Socio- economic families, many of which do not have the resources to provide these types of games for their children to play at home.
This project is so important because it allows my students to reinforce their spelling, counting, and other academic pursuits, in a fun and engaging way.
The benefits of play for children has been proven to be an engaging way for students to learn while having fun, making them want to continue counting, reading, and spelling without even realizing they are working! With your help, my students will have some much needed games and a storage unit to keep them in, too.
