Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is a vibrant group of second graders, ages seven and eight, at a Title I school in East Palo Alto, CA. They are smart, talented, and excited to learn! We consider ourselves a school family and support each other every day to work hard, reach our goals, and learn from our mistakes. My goal is to provide my students with resources and materials that will spark their creativity and create a passion for learning.
My students live less than ten minutes away from some of the largest tech companies in the world and an Ivy League school, yet the high school graduation rate for their zip code is 50%.
I want to set my students up on a pathway to success and college for certain! I am committed to providing them with an equitable quality of education compared to that of what students receive in neighboring affluent school districts.
My Project
I am asking for decorations and props to transform my classroom into Andy's room from Toy Story. I plan on transforming my classroom into a whimsical toy land where students will be mesmerized and excited to learn. Students will work through "break out" challenges to unlock Andy's missing toys. They will work through different stations to "unlock" each challenge, and receive a piece to their puzzle.
Students will complete STEAM challenges in; science, technology, engineering, art, and math.
They will work to earn their puzzle piece, and once their puzzle is complete they will get the combination to unlock their group's box and recover one of Andy's toys inside. To help students get into Woody's character, they will be wearing straw cowboy hats and bandannas. By providing students with this experience they will be deeply engaged in mastering the content. Brain science says that novelty engages the brain and helps it retain information.
