I teach at a large public high school in a rural community. I teach 155 10th grade students Geometry. I like to do a lot of hands on activities with my students to allow them to experience the mathematics for themselves. Projects and activities are expensive!! This is why I need your help. I want to have my students use the topic of rigidity (the strongest shape is a triangle) to build towers out of sandwich picks and hot glue. They will need to use only 200 sandwich picks and yet the tower must be as strong as possible. We will test the strength of each tower by placing weights on top, one at a time, until it crushes. They will find out that the tower is only as strong as it's weakest sandwich pick! I will need the following items: 1. 30 mini hot glue guns
2. about 2000 mini glue sticks
3. about 16,000 sandwich picks
4. about 30 1-lb weights (small brick type)
5. 8 extension cords
Hands-on activities make math come alive! Please fund this activity so my students can take part in this worthwhile experience.
