My students come from all over the state of Illinois, bringing with them diverse backgrounds and a variety of learning experiences.
As a teacher at the Illinois School for the Deaf, I believe that becoming strong readers will empower my students to be able to chase after their dreams.
Because they face challenges in accessing information in much of their everyday lives, strong literacy skills are paramount. With such, there will be no limit to the information they can access via the printed word. Each year, I strive to instill a love for reading in each child, building readers one book at a time!
My Project
Across a variety of reading levels, my students have worked tirelessly to build their reading abilities. This year, we decided on a Tower of Books Challenge to encourage and motivate independent reading. Almost half the students have already topped the challenge of passing 40 Accelerated Reader tests on books within their ZPDs (zones of proximal development)! The other half are close and trying to finish before the end of the year!
Having read as much as they have, they are eager to get their hands on some new materials!
Non-fiction books that build background knowledge help fill in gaps they may have in their learning, while series books have been the most requested by the students! Series books also allow struggling and developing readers to become more familiar with and confident in what they are reading.
