My Students

In middle school, students begin thinking about college. Academics at an International Baccalaureate school must be kept rigorous for all students. Even though classroom teachers differentiate instruction, it is difficult for striving students to keep up with the grade-level expectations of academic proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

At my school, students are 70% eligible for free and reduced-priced lunches; in addition, 10% of students are English language learners, striving to overcome academic and social barriers to achieve academic success.

Regardless, students are determined to overcome these barriers and 90% of students are motivated to attend college.

Specifically, in my classroom, students struggle in demonstrating reading proficiency at grade-level. Students participate in assessments throughout the school year to identify who needs small-group support in acquiring reading strategies and leveled books. As much as possible, students engage in current events and diversity and social justice readings to complement the curriculum.

Research says that when students engage in metacognition (thinking about their thinking processes) they will better comprehend the material. I provide this support in the classroom for students to become excited about reading. I also provide support to build their skills to be successful in reading for life.

My Project

This project contains books of varying genres, styles, authors, text lengths, and award winners to encourage and motivate students to read throughout the year. The classroom I teach in has some classic novels ideal for the middle school reading classroom, yet students gravitated towards shorter texts, like graphic novels, that give them a sense of accomplishment for finishing a book!

The books and resources in this project are for supporting a Tower of Books Challenge: students will be challenged to read 40 books throughout the year exploring a variety of genres and authors.

The graphic novels support students knowledge of the classics written in a comprehensible manner. The picture books are part of a curriculum focused on grit, perseverance, and integrity. Additionally, students will be challenged to read novels that have won the Newbery Award and Caldecott Awards. Other texts and the classroom rug are included from specific student requests to have a more comfortable reading experience.

Participation rewards include bookmarks and certificates. This year, I plan to start the challenge in September. This early start date will allow students will have more time to read the 40 books during the school year!
