I teach at a Title I school in rural West Michigan where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Students are encouraged in our building to focus on their future goals and dreams.
Many students are excited to learn more in the areas of science and health!
This is a subject that requires many hands-on lessons and materials that our school struggles to purchase and students don’t often have access to at home. Students love our classroom garden and I would love for the lessons we learn here to follow them home.
My Project
These things will help the students participate in making different recipes with our tower garden produce. The students can harvest, wash, cut and measure the ingredients to make salads and smoothies. Many will be trying things they haven't tried before and learning life skill to help them become healthier adults.
Kids will harvest, prepare, and eat greens and veggies they grow in our classroom.
Participating in the prep work will also give them more incentive to try these new things! Because many don't get the recommended amount of veggies each day, this helps them see how to encourage their families to incorporate more into their diets at home.
