My students need "at level" texts such as Trumpet of the Swan, James and the Giant Peach, and Freckle Juice to bridge their summer learning from a hard year's work in 2nd grade to 3rd grade.

My Students
Deep in the heart of the Silicon Valley rests a beautiful campus full of happy energetic students who come to school each day eager to learn in a meaningful learning environment. The students at my school inspire me to create lessons and be an innovative teacher that will spark their imaginations, add to their life schema, and help prepare them for the world of the 21st century. I am proud to help students do their best...whether it is learning the language, picking up comprehension skills that will enhance the reading experience, solving rigorous math problems, expressing themselves through the arts, experimenting to challenge an idea, or having fun throughout the experience.
My Project
With inspiration from "March Madness" tournament brackets in basketball...I have designed a fun and meaningful summer reading program for my second grade students that will pit books against each other to find a champion. A total of eight books for enrichment and eight for intervention will give the students an opportunity to find high interest "at level" text to support reading over the summer.
To avoid the "summer slide", Tournament of Books will give students the chance to read and write with engaging materials over the summer to be prepared for the next grade level.
Every two weeks a winner will be announced based on written compare and contrast responses on each bracket.
Once all books have been read over the course of 9 weeks this summer, a winner will be announced at the beginning of the next school year.
